AUSC thermal power plants to emit less carbon: Chidambaram

Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government, R Chidambaram, today said India was working on a plan to commission Advanced Ultra Supercritical (AUSC) thermal power stations, which would emit less carbon dioxide.
"Research and development work for commissioning of AUSC is underway. The power stations to be developed with ultra- modern technology will emit minimal carbon dioxide, which will ultimately be better for the environment," Chidambaram, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, said.
He was speaking at the 32nd Foundation Day of the Raja Ramana Centre for Advanced Technology here.
Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) were jointly involved in research and development work for installing AUSC thermal stations and the Centre was making funds available for it, he added.

"High-quality leadership, science and technology besides knowledge inspired economy will strengthen India economically, scientifically and strategically," he said.
Emphasising on the use of technology to promote rural development, Chidambaram said basic research and higher education need improvement.
