The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to award tenders for laying a pipeline to supply treated sewage water for gardening in a south Delhi colony.

A bench of Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore and expert member Satyawan Singh Garbyal directed the DDA and the SDMC to complete the exercise by November 15, and warned that in case of default, a cost of Rs 10,000 each would be imposed on them.

"Further, they are directed to continue the supply of water by temporary arrangements till November 15, 2018. DDA and MCD Delhi shall submit a report on completion of the work on November 16, 2018," the bench said.

The order came after the tribunal was informed that tenders for pipes have been floated and once they are finalised, the pipes will be laid down on a stretch of approximately 6 km, after which regular supply of treated water will be made available to the parks.

The tribunal had earlier directed the civic authorities to file an action taken report on making a pipeline operational to supply treated sewage water for gardening in Vasant Kunj here.

It had also prohibited the residents, DDA, SDMC and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) from using fresh water for gardening purposes.

The counsel for DJB had earlier told the bench that there was a sewage treatment plant in Vasant Kunj in south Delhi from where treated sewage water could be provided to the residents for the purpose.

The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by retired Rear Admiral A P Revi seeking directions for supply of treated sewage water in Vasant Kunj for gardening and other purposes so that they do not have to use fresh water.

The plea had said that treated water should be used for maintenance of greenery in the Vasant Kunj area.
