After winning the Best Film title under the Critics' Choice category at the prestigious Venice International Festival and having participated in dozens of film festivals around the world, Nepalese movie Kalo Pothi (The Black Hen) opened to packed theaters here at the weekend.
The film, directed by debut filmmaker Min Bahadur Bham, premiered on June 3, amid a star-studded affair at the Kumari Hall, in the Capital.
Made with an investment of Rs 30 million, which it partly received from prominent grants like the World Cinema Fund, Swiss Fund Vision Sud, and Aide aux Cinemas du monde, 'Kalo Pothi' has already made history by becoming the first Nepali feature film to get an entry in the prestigious Venice International Film Festival in September last year.
The movie, set in the backdrop of the 10-year-long Maoist insurgency unfolds in remote Mugu district of mountainous western Nepal region, in the year 2001 when the insurgency was at its peak there.
Told through the perspective of two children, the movie traces the loss of innocence of not just its protagonists but also the nation at large.
Kalo Pothi features actors Khadka Raj Nepali, Sukra Raj Rokaya, Jit Bahadur Malla, Hansha Khadka, and Benisha Hamal, among others.
Notably, the movie is also a complete shift from the traditional Nepalese movie, which mostly copied the glamorous Bollywood films which include love songs and action sequence.
