Aligarh Muslim University Employees Union (AMUEU) today said banning telecast of a Hindi news channel for a day was an "attack" on civil liberty and freedom of speech in the country.
General secretary of the union Shamim Akhter, in a statement, said civil and democratic organisations in the country should support NDTV India in its "ongoing attempts to protect the freedom of the media in the country".
If the right thinking persons fail to understand the "threat" presently posed to the freedom of speech in the country, then tomorrow it will be too late, he said.
He said the Central government was "misusing" the idea of nationalism by "dubbing" any voice of dissent as "anti-national" with the "intent to crush it".
Akther said BJP leaders do not have the "sole right to judge whether any action was national or anti-national".
