In a bid to strengthen the party and make it more active, the BJP Bengal unit has planned to restructure its state committee and remove "inactive" memebers, who include a few celebrities, from it.
"If you have to strengthen the party you need to have active, agile and experienced members in the state unit. Inactive members are of no use to the party - rather they are a liability.
"So we have decided to remove some inactive members including a few celebrities from the list of invitees", state BJP president Dilip Ghosh told PTI.
According to state BJP sources, among those who might be ommitted from the state unit are music director and singer Bappi Lahiri, singer Arati Mukhopadhyay and quiz master Barry O' Brien.
Lahiri had contested the Lok Sabha polls on a BJP ticket from the Sreerampur parliamentary constituency in 2014.
"None of them had either attended any meeting or any programme of the party since 2014 Lok Sabha polls. There are a few retired bureaucrats, who are also inactive. We will take a final call on it within the next few days," Ghosh said.
State BJP sources said the Bengal unit wanted to present a picture of a 'strong and active' state committee ahead of the party's two-day national executive meeting in Bhubaneswar from April 15.
