The first BIMSTEC disaster management exercise will be organised in Delhi-NCR this week with an aim of sharing best practices among member-nations to strengthen the regional coordination, the Union home ministry said.
The exercise, to be held on October 10-13, will be a platform to share best practices on all aspects of disaster risk reduction and strengthening regional response and coordination for disaster management among BIMSTEC countries.
The exercise will test the region's preparedness and resilience towards effective activation of inter-governmental interaction, dialogue and agreements for immediate deployment of regional resources for disaster response, a home ministry statement said.
The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation involves countries in South and South East Asia. These nations are: Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal.
The exercise will help create synergy and synchronise efforts to institutionalise regional cooperation among the member-countries.
It will also help strengthen the effective utilisation of search and rescue teams for disaster relief and emergency response, including rapid assessment and management of mass casualties, especially in situations involving breakdown of infrastructure and communication, the statement said.
