To sensitise stakeholders on various issues and options concerning bioenergy in view of sugar crops being a major contributor to bio-fuels, a three- day national symposium is being organised here from June 23.
The event will provide a common platform for technology developers, stakeholders, policymakers and other players in the bio-energy sector to update on the latest developments, a release from Sugarcane Breeding Institute (SBI), the organisers, said here today.
"The 'National Symposium on Bioenergy for sustainable development - The potential role of sugar crops', has been jointly organised by 'Society for Sugarcane Research and Development," Vijayan Nair, director, SBI, said.
As bioenergy has taken centre-stage in recent years in view of the concern about depletion of fossil fuels and other environmental issues, there would be seven technical sessions to deliberate on emerging issues in sugarcane production and sugar and energy sectors, with focus on key areas like second generation ethanol, carbon foot-prints, co-generation and policy issues, Nair said.
Over 200 delegates from across India, including scientists from Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Council for Scientific & Industrial Research, Universities and Industry are participating in the event, to be inaugurated by K Ramasamy, vice-chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Nair said.
