Senior Congress leader Madhusudan Mistry today said BJP is trying to create a wrong perception among people that Congress is not allowing the Goods and Service Tax (GST) bill to pass in the Parliament.
"We are not against the GST bill. The BJP is trying to create a wrong perception among people that the Congress is not allowing the bill in the Rajya Sabha," Mistry told reporters here.
"I was member of the Select Committee of Rajya Sabha which had vetted the bill. The original bill of GST tabled by UPA government and the new GST bill brought by NDA government has many differences," the Congress MP in Rajya Sabha from Gujarat, said.
"We had raised three issues with the NDA government regarding putting 18 per cent cap on tax in the bill, removal of levy of one per cent additional GST by states and change in grievance rederessal mechanism," he said.
"The NDA government gave positive response on only one point and that was of removal of levy one per cent additional GST by states. However, they did not give positive response on other two issues. That is the reason GST bill has not passed," Mistry claimed.
He said he has come here to clarify that Congress is not responsible for non-passing of GST bill in the Rajya Sabha.
Mistry said non-functioning of Parliament is directly related to the "actions of Pirme Minister Narendra Modi-led government" like raiding and sealing office of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and "arbitrary behaviour" of Arunachal Pradesh Governor Jyoti Prakash Rajkhowa who attempted toppling the Congress government in that state.
