Senior BJP leader Laxmi Kanta Chawla today demanded that the government should constitute a pay commission to review the salaries of homeguard jawans and contractual workers.
"I am amazed that the governments have forgotten to review salaries of the homeguard jawans and contractual workers," she said.
"Central government employees get Rs 18,000-20,000 for the same work for which the homeguard jawans and the contractual workers get Rs 800-1200," BJP's former national vice president said.
She criticised the constitution of seventh pay commission for the central government employees and the proposed committee for the review of salaries of MPs, and MLAs.
"Government should show some humanness and constitute a commission or committee to review the salaries of the Gaurd jawans and contract workers. It (committee/commission) should offer some relief to these workers, who suffer from financial discrimination," she told PTI today.
She said contractual workers work in both government and private sectors and there is a huge difference in the salaries of permanent and contractual employees.
"I want government to take cognisance of this," she said, alleging that contractual workers were being exploited.
"It is sad that contractual workers are being exploited. Government makes them day-dream about making their jobs permanent but keep them working for Rs 5000-8000," she said.
"This is the reason youths are getting disappointed and hopeless," the former minister in Punjab cabinet said.
"The homeguard jawans and the contractual workers must be paid enough money so that they can arrange for their food and manage their medical expenses," she said.
