BJP resolution hails Goa coalition govt as historic phase

The BJP today termed as a "historic phase in the modern politics of Goa" the formation of the coalition government under Manohar Parrikar.
"This is indeed a historic phase in Goa's modern day politics. With the support of the regional parties and independents, the new government has taken charge to uphold Goa's progress as the thrust area," reads a political resolution passed at the BJP's state executive meeting held here.
In the meeting, chaired by the Goa unit BJP president Vinay Tendulkar and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, the party discussed and introspected its failure to secure majority on its own in the recently-held Assembly polls in the coastal state.

"In Goa, although the BJP secured 34 per cent of the vote share, the same did not translate into number of seats. The party bagged 13 seats in the 40-member Assembly," stated the resolution.
At the meeting, the BJP leaders took potshots at the Congress party, which despite emerging as the single largest party with 17 seats, failed to capture power.
"The Congress party despite winning 17 seats, could neither manage to stake its claim to form the government nor could it manage to get the support of MLAs to reach the simple majority mark.

"The people of Goa saw the real face of the greed and self-centric behaviour of the Congress party. They could not even reach a consensus to decide their leader and failed on all counts to form the government in Goa," the resolution said.

Speaking about the BJP's attempts to form the government, the resolution said, "On the other hand, the BJP was seen as a natural choice for the coalition by the MLAs of other regional parties as well as Independents. It was the single demand of all these MLAs that if anyone could lead the new government, then that person would be Manohar Parrikar."
It stated: "Parrikar, who was holding the Defence portfolio in the Union cabinet, keeping up with his track record of immense respect to the decisions of the party, stepped down and came to Goa."
As per the resolution, the people of Goa "have debunked the myth propagated by the Congress party" and the BJP has emerged as the party that is open and acceptable to alliances respects the mandate of the people.

Referring to the Aam Aadmi Party, the resolution said, "it is heartening that parties like AAP are trying to create sensationalism and degrading the political traditions and has been shown the door by the people of Goa."
In a veiled reference to Vishwajeet Rane who crossed over to the BJP from the Congress, the resolution said, "recent incidents have singularly indicated that Congress party is losing its ground and hence elected members are abandoning it one after another throughout the country."
The resolution said that the Congress party is "demeaning" the stature of the party in Goa by its allegations of the purchase of MLAs.

"Such attempts only bring to fore the frustration of the Congress party and its leaders such as Digvijaya Singh. BJP outrightly condemns such attempts of the Congress party aimed at bringing disrepute to the elected members of Goa Legislative Assembly," it stated.
The state executive also extended its gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for having consented to allow Parrikar to take charge as Chief Minister of Goa.
The Parrikar-led coalition comprises three MLAs each of the Goa Forward Party and the Maharashtravadi Gomantak Party, besides three Independents.
