The BJP, which is supporting the National Peoples Party-led coalition government in Meghalaya, today said the party has decided to support Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma as the consensus candidate for the August 23 South Tura bye-elections.
The party has also decided not to field any candidate for the Ranikor bye-elections but to support the NPP candidate Martin M Danggo, a former Speaker, who is seeking re-election to the seat on NPP ticket.
The party has unanimously decided to support the candidature of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for South Tura bye-elections this August 23, BJP state president Shibun Lyngdoh told PTI.
He said the decision in this regards was taken at a recently held meeting of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) partners, which include the United Democratic Party, Peoples Democratic Forum, Hills State Peoples Democratic Party, the BJP and the lone MLA of the Nationalist Congress Party.
He said the party has also decided not to field any candidate for the bye-elections to Ranikor which will be held on the same day later this month.
The party leaders which met at Nongjri village under Ranikor constituency yesterday decided not to field any candidates, he said.
Former Congress leader Danggo resigned in June and joined the NPP last month and has announced he is seeking re-election on an NPP ticket.
