Scores of BJP workers today raised slogans and burnt effigy of senior SP leader Azam Khan for his alleged 'indecent' remarks against the party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The workers under the leadership of city president Surendra Maithani gathered at the Afeem Kothi here raising slogans and burnt the effigy of Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Azam Khan.
A scuffle broke out between the police and the workers when the former tried to resist them from burning the effigy.
Maithani claimed that Azam has made "wrong and indecent" remarks against the PM, who is holding a constitutional post and demanded his apology.
"Azam Khan used wrong and indecent words against Prime Minister who holds a constitutional post. So we are protesting. He should apologise or he will not be allowed to enter into the city," Maithani said.
He slammed Khan saying that he is frustrated because of his deteriorating image following which he is making such comments and warned the SP leaders of dire consequences if they did not refrain from making such statements.
"If the Samajwadi party leaders do not refrain from making such comments then we will take to the streets," he added.
Azam Khan had yesterday at a programme in Faizabad alleged that "mischievous" activities are being carried out daily at the behest of the saffron party to flare up communal atmosphere in all the districts of the state.
"Saffron party is conspiring to organise Muzaffarnagar and Gujarat-like riots in UP," the Samajwadi Party leader had alleged.
"In every district, mischievous activities are being carried out daily to flare up the communal atmosphere," Khan said.
