Maharashtra Government today admitted in the Legislative Council that hospitals run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are "overburdened" with patients, but there are adequate doctors to cater to them.
Raising the issue of overcrowded OPDs in the civic-run hospitals through the calling attention motion, NCP MLC Rahul Narvekar said the condition of these hospitals is deteriorating.
Narvekar said the government has failed to implement the rule under which graduate MBBS doctors have to give an undertaking to work in rural areas for one year and it is also unable to get enough doctors to work in the civic-run hospitals.
"OPDs in all the super-specialty hospitals are visited by more than 45,000 patients but there are no enough doctors to treat them," Narvekar said.
MLC Vidya Chavan said there is an urgent need for nursing homes at the level of each ward as civic dispensaries lack adequate infrastructure.
Replying to the motion, Dr Ranjit Patil, Minister of State for Home (Urban Development) said despite being overburdened the civic hospitals in Mumbai are attending to patients from the city as well as from outside.
Graduate doctors have approached high court against the decision of the civic body to sign the bond thus the government cannot force them to work in BMC-run hospitals, Patil told Narvekar.
