The victims, identified as Kamatchi (50) wife of Vadivel and her friend Chellamal (65), a widow, were daily wage labourers, police said.
They said the duo, who used to frequent a nearby liquor shop, were found dead in Kamatchi's hut.
Police said the next of kin of the deceased attempted to cremate the bodies wihtout their knowledge.
The incident created a flutter at the village.
