According to police reports, the body of Pabir Kumar Das (66) was found lying in a pool of blood inside his apartment in Dhakuria's Ballygunge Terrace area within the limits of Lake Police Station.
Local residents alerted the police at around noon, when Das' maid servant informed them about no one opening the doors or answering to calls, a senior Kolkata Police officer said.
The police broke open the doors and found Das, who was alone in his apartment, lying in a pool of blood, he said.
During a search, the police found that the family's pet dog was locked in a room in the apartment.
"It is still unclear why the dog was locked inside another room. What is more mysterious is that the door of the apartment was locked from inside. We are checking every possible angle," he said.
