The Bombay High Court today granted 28-day furlough to gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli who is lodged in a central jail here.
A division bench of justices Bhushan Dharmadhikari and V M Deshpande directed the authorities concerned to release Gawli in two-weeks time, his counsel Mir Nagman Ali said.
Gawli, the founder of Akhil Bharatiya Sena, was in August 2012 convicted for the murder of Shiv Sena MLA Kamalakar Jamsandekar in 2008, and sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court in Mumbai.
He was shifted to Nagpur central jail in 2014.
Gawli had applied for a furlough to DIG (Prisons) on December 15, 2016. However, his application was rejected on February 1.
Subsequently, a writ petition was filed on February 6 in the high court.
Furlough is leave from prison that every convict is entitled to by way of right, senior counsel Anil Mardikar said.
A prisoner is entitled to be released on furlough for 14 days in a year. However, he may seek 14 days of extension by citing reasons for it.
