Kerala-based Yogakshema Sabha, a socio-cultural outfit of Malayali Brahmin community, today demanded that the Bhagavad Gita be made the "national scripture", saying its central message is about energising the physical and mental prowess to carry out one's duty.
Yogakshema Sabha president Akeeraman Kalidasan Bhattathiripad said that it was unfortunate that a controversy had been triggered on this issue.
"Mahatma Gandhi had said the Gita was his mother. C Rajagopalachary had observed that the Gita would have been declared a holy scripture if it was born in any other country," he said in a statement.
"The Gita is against all sorts of superstition. Its central message is about energising the physical and mental prowess to carry out one's duty and thereby lead a meaningul life with a true sense of justice," he said.
Instead of creating a controversy over it, people professing all faiths should come forward to make it the "national scripture," he said.
