The border guards of India and Bangladesh today kept their guns and combat uniforms aside and played football at a remote village in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district to help build confidence and comradeship among themselves.
"These sporting events are organised as part of confidence-building measures between the two border guarding forces," a spokesperson of the Border Security Force (BSF) said here.
The football match was also witnessed by thousands of civilians from both sides of the border who cheered for their respective sides. The match was organised to help improve co-ordination among both the border guarding forces, he said.
Among those who came to support the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) team from Bangladesh include Sector Commander Col Kazi Aniruddha, Lt Col Md Anusur Rahman along with other BGB officers and other ranks while from the BSF side UPS Pathania (DIG) along with Commandants of local BSF battalions and many other ranks witnessed the match.
Meanwhile, the BSF official said nearly 200 cows were seized and handed over to the authorities along the Indo-Bangladesh border in the state in the past one week.
