Buddhadeb slams Mamata for opposition to Teesta water treaty

Criticising his successor Mamata Banerjee for opposing the water sharing treaty with Bangladesh, former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today asked whether her party wanted unrest and fundamental forces to prevail in the neighbouring country.
"We all want good relations with our neighbour Bangladesh. We don't want communal forces and anti-India forces in Bangladesh. We want a India friendly and secular Bangladesh," Bhattacharjee, CPI(M) Politburo member, said during an event here.
"Was it really necessary to create an impasse on water sharing and enclaves? The matter could have been solved rationally," he said.
The Teesta water sharing treaty with Bangladesh was shelved by the Union government in 2011, just a day ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Bangladesh, following opposition from Banerjee.

The failure in clinching the water sharing treaty with India, has turned into an political issue in the neighbouring country with the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by Khaleda Zia trying to corner the ruling Awami League led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Bhattacharjee also took a dig at Pakistani High Commissioner Salman Bashir handing over an invitation by his Prime Minister to Banerjee to visit Pakistan.

"The people of Bengal can never oppose Bangladesh as we all share a bond. Do they (Trinamool Congress government) want unrest and fundamental forces to prevail in Bangladesh?
"Is this the reason that Pakistan's Ambassador has come to invite her? We also want good relations with Pakistan, but not at the cost of Bangladesh," Bhattacharjee said.

"We don't know what will happen on coming Sunday (elections in Bangladesh), but we want a friendly neighbour," he added.
