Building collapse: Civic, police officials suspended

The concerned deputy municipal commissioner and senior police inspector have been suspended in connection with the building crash at Shil-Phata in Daighar in Mumbra, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said here today.
The death toll has gone up to 44 while 53 were injured in the incident, Chavan said, replying to a discussion in the Legislative Assembly.
An additional chief secretary level enquiry has been ordered, he informed.
The state government has also announced Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 each to those seriously injured, the chief minister said.
The seven-storey under-construction illegal structure crashed like a pack of cards yesterday.
Thane Civic Commissioner R A Rajeev, District Collector P Velarasu, and Thane Police chief K P Raghuvanshi were overseeing the rescue and relief operations.
The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Thane, Kalwa and Mumbra and the seriously injured were shifted to JJ and Sion Hospitals in Mumbai.
The Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Home Minister R R Patil, Thane's Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik, Minister of State for Tribal Welfare Rajendra Gavit visited the crash site as also the hospitals and enquired about the health of the injured.
