Jagan alias Jaganathan, was attacked while riding pillion on a scooter by three men who came on two motorbikes. They however spared the bike rider.
They were joined by a five-member gang in a car who allegedly opened fire from a pistol, injuring him on his right hand and left shoulder.
A senior police official told PTI that the victim was also a local DMK activist and a history-sheeter and was facing several criminal cases, but had not been involved in any crimes for several years.
Jagan was rushed to a government hospital and later to a corporate hospital, where he is now being treated.
The official said eye witnesses had seen the incident and claimed to have heard shots. The man's injuries appeared to be grievous and he continues to get treated," he said.
This is the second attempt on Jagan's life. The previous attempt was made by another criminal gang in May last year.
Police said they are probing various angles in the case, including whether it was previous enmity.
