Capt Nongrum is the first and the only person in Meghalaya to have been awarded the second highest gallantry award, 'Maha Vir Chakra' for bravery posthumously.
Proud parents of Nongrum, who fell to the bullets of the enemies during the war, were present at the function which was attended by a host of civil and military dignitaries.
A brief life history of Nongrum was read out and especially how he led his column to capture an important position, point 4812, in the Batalik sector of Jammu and Kashmir on June 1, 1999.
