The Union Cabinet today gave its ex-post approval for the Memorandum of Understanding signed between India and Canada to increase cooperation in the field of intellectual property (IP).

The MoU, an official statement said, is intended to promote innovation, creativity and economic growth in both the countries.

The decision regarding this ex-post approval was taken in a cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here.

"The MoU establishes a broad and flexible framework through which both countries can exchange best practices and work together on training programmes and technical exchanges to raise awareness on IPRs and better protect intellectual property rights," it added.

The priority initiatives under the agreement include exchange of experts for interacting with the human resources engaged in specialised IP fields; cooperation in the development of automation arid implementation of modernisation projects, new and existing documentation and information systems in IP.

The initiatives also include exchange of best practices, experiences and knowledge on ways to raise IP awareness among the public, businesses and educational institutions.
