The Calcutta High Court today asked a monk of Barrackpore Ramakrishna Mission to counsel a couple who is involved in regular marital strife, in a bid to ensure proper education and normal life for their 16-year-old daughter.

Justice Nadira Patherya also directed the local police to pay visits to the couple's residence to see that peace prevailed at their home.

The petition was filed by the girl's paternal grandmother Bela Rani who claimed that she was physically and mentally tortured by her daughter-in-law and that the police had not acted upon her complaint.

Observing that a normal life and proper education of the girl was her prime concern, Justice Patherya, who is also the chairperson of Juvenile Justice Committee of the high court, talked to the couple Tarak and Bina Sarkar and also to their daughter.

The court said it wants to ensure that the girl, who will write her school leaving board examination next year, gets a proper environment to study and directed that a senior monk of the Barrackpore Ramakrishna Mission, located about 25 km from the city, to counsel the couple to ensure that they live a peaceful life.

The judge said that the mission will also provide vocational training to the woman, which will ensure that she becomes self-sufficient and remain busy with her work.

She also asked the officer in-charge of Titagarh police station under Barrackpore commissionarate to pay visits as and when possible to the couple's residence, apart from deputing a constable to visit their house once every fortnight for the next three months.
