Campaign ends for Kolkata municipal polls

The campaign for the April 18 election to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation today ended with all political parties making last-ditch efforts to woo voters.
The polling for the 144-seat KMC, which is presently controlled by the Trinamool Congres, will be held on April 18 and the results will be declared on April 28.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, today took out a 9-km-long road show in south Kolkata to drum up support for her party candidates on the last day of campaign.
Former West Bengal Chief Minister and CPI(M) politburo member Buddhadeb Bhattacharya also campaigned today.

Several top CPI(M) leaders, including politburo member Sitaram Yechury and state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra, organized several meetings and massive roadshows.
Opposition parties have alleged violence by Trinamool Congress in the run-up to the poll. There was sporadic violence in several parts of the city in the last leg of campaigning today too in which CPI(M) workers in Patuli, Narkeldanga and Kasba were attacked and injured.
The police has launched an investigation into the incidents in the two places.
The State Election Commission, which has attracted severe criticism from the opposition parties for sitting on complaints by the opposition, yesterday asked the South 24-Parganas district magistrate and Kolkata Police commissioner to inquire into the alleged attack on BJP leader Rupa Ganguly and take necessary action.
