In a relief to e-rickshaw drivers, Delhi government today decided to organise special camps for issuing driving licenses to them to operate the battery-operated vehicles in the national capital.
In a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, officials of the transport department were asked to organise special camps at all the 13 regional offices so that e-rickshaw drivers do not have to face problems in getting licenses.
"We have been asked to set up special camps for the drivers of e-rickshaws to make their licence," said a senior official.
According to a senior government official, 350 licenses have been issued to e-rickshaw drivers by the transport department so far.
Working for the welfare of e-rickshaw drivers is a priority of Aam Aadmi Party government.
On complaints of e-rickshaws drivers after their vehicles came under the ambit of Motor Vehicles Act, the new government has set up a 7-member committee of AAP volunteers to look into the issue, saying that if need be, they would approach the Centre.
In the meeting, transport department officials also gave presentations on several issues, including BRT, traffic, numbers of buses etc.
Yesterday, transport minister Gopal Rai said that government would also try to bring the Delhi Traffic Police under its ambit to improve the traffic situation in the national capital.
The erstwhile Congress government led by Sheila Dikshit had also made efforts to assume control over the police which comes under the Union Home Ministry during her 15-year-long rule but without success.
