Investigators probing the sedition case, in which the JNU students' union president has been arrested, have urged Delhi Police's top brass to transfer it to the Special Cell, saying the matter requires "specialised investigation".
In a letter addressed to the Delhi Police's top brass, the DCP heading the probe said, "The matter needs probe regarding the links between JNU students and Afzal Guru as the students were against his death sentence. Moreover, the offences in the case fall under Scheduled Offences, which require specialised investigation."
"The matter should, therefore, be transferred to the Special Cell in view of the gravity of the offence," a police source said citing the letter.
The source said senior officials of the district have too suggested that the National Investigation Agency should also be involved in the probe, considering the nature of charges and the legalities involved.
On Tuesday, an event was held inside the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, following which a case of sedition and criminal conspiracy was registered and JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar arrested.
Police are looking for 13 other students for their alleged involvement in the event, the source added.
