CBI has detained a senior railway engineer for allegedly taking money from a contractor as part of a deal purportedly fixed by a Mumbai-based editor of a magazine.
The sources said CBI has searched the premises of the engineer in Gorakhpur, and the contractor and the editor in Mumbai during which it claimed to have recovered material indicating the role of the editor in extracting favours for him from senior railway officers.
Refusing to disclose details, highly placed sources in the agency today said the journalist had deputed regional correspondents who filed RTI application which were used to publish "sensational and derogatory" material against the railway officers.
The sources said they have come to know that some very senior officers in the railways were in regular touch with the editor of the publication.
The sources said these officers have often been "cajoling" him and extended number of railway facilities such as accommodation, the access to railway telephone, use of railway premises as well as privilege ticket reservation and confirmation.
"Recently, the railway officers booked an auditorium in their name to facilitate a seminar being organised by the journalist," a CBI officer said.
The sources said they had got the tip-off that the editor was facilitating a deal with the engineer posted in Gorakhpur after which the agency registered a case and carried out searches.
