BJP today alleged CBI, apparently under pressure from Congress, has made a mockery of the judicial system in Y S Jaganmohan Reddy's disproportionate assets case by keeping him in custody for 16 months but now letting him be freed on bail with little protest.
Raising several questions about the DA cases against Jagan, BJP charged Congress "blatantly" misused the investigating agency for political purposes in the alleged financial anomalies that had taken place during the rule of a Congress Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.
"The news of Jaganmohan Reddy being given bail after 16 months in jail raises a lot of questions about the way CBI has handled the case. After staggering the charge sheet and 16 months in custody, today we are told that on eight of the ten cases CBI has said it did not find any material," BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.
She alleged that keeping a person in custody for more than 90 days without a case is itself a mockery of the criminal justice system.
"Keeping Jaganmohan in custody for 16 months without adequate reason and letting him go today without any protest seemed very odd. More importantly, more than six cabinet ministers who are equally accused in these very cases where Jagan is accused no. 1 continue as ministers," she said.
The BJP leader alleged Congress has made a mockery of the whole legal process with these chargesheeted ministers not only continuing as ministers but not even being arrested for a day, with the exception of one.
"Can there be a more blatant misuse of CBI by the Congress than this?" Sitharaman said.
