Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs is likely to approve the merger of Central Inland Water Tranport Corporation with the Inland Waterways Authority of India in its next meeting.
A proposal by the Ministry of Shipping is based on the report of Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture.
"The technical know how and the experience of the employees of the CIWTC and its existing infrastructure be effectively utilised by IWAI," the committee had said.
"We hope that in the next CCEA meeting this proposal is cleared," a Shipping Ministry official told PTI.
CIWTC is presently engaged in transportation of cargo through Inland Waterways, operational repair of IWT (Inland Waterways Transport) vessels and operation and maintenance of four major and many minor terminals.
The IWAI is engaged in development and regulation of inland waterways for shipping and navigation. It undertakes projects for development and maintenance of IWT infrastructure on national waterways through grant received from Ministry of Shipping.
