The decision to relax the land requirement norms for the Ghani Khan Ghoudhary Institute of Engineering and Technology (GKCIET) in Malda was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

In November, 2008 the Cabinet had approved establishment (GKCIET) for which West Bengal government was to provide 150 to 200 acres of land free of cost. However, the state government later conveyed its inability to find suitable non-agricultural land.

Today, it was decided to relax the requirement of 250-300 acres of land before starting construction activities for GKCIET.

The cabinet also approved that the issue of obtaining 150 to 200 acres of land free of cost from the state government be pursued.
