Chamling, also president of the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front, said the panchayat office bearer has the same responsibility for his jurisdiction as the prime minister or chief minister has for the country or a state.
"I also appeal to you all to work with utmost dedication, devotion and sincerity by upholding the dignity of the post for which you have been elected," Chamling said while addressing the newly-elected panchayat representatives.
He said the state government has ensured empowerment of women by providing for 50 per cent reservation for them in the two-tier panchayati raj.
The SDF has won over 90 per cent seats in the recently-held polls for 1038 gram panchayat and 111 zilla panchayat seats.
