After successfully setting up transmission line from Assam to Agra last month, state-run Power Grid will link 1,365 kms stretch between Chhattisgarh and Haryana by April next year.
The entire Rs 11,500-crore HVDC (high voltage direct current) link between the two states will be developed in four phases and completed by March 2017 with a total capacity of 6,000 MW.
"... The first pole of 1,500 MW (phase) will be operationalised next year and the remaining three poles of 1,500 MW each will be completed by March 2017," a senior official said.
Under the HVDC 6,000 MW transmission link, the entire line will be laid down in the first phase but its capacity of transmitting current will be enhanced to full capacity in phases.
The first phase of the project entails an investment of Rs 6,000 crore while the remaining three phase would cost over Rs 1,500 crore each.
HVDC is the best tool for smooth grid operation and would go a long way in integrating renewable energy. India is most effectively utilising the hybrid system of extra high voltage of alternate current and direct current.
"Power Grid completed the first phase Assam to Agra link last month which facilitates supply of power on either side. At present, its capacity is 1,500 MW which will be eventually enhanced to 6,000 MW by August next year," the official said.
Apart from these two 6,000 MW HVDC lines, Power Grid is also working on another such link between Raipur in Chhattisgarh to Pugalur in Tamil Nadu.
"Once all these HVDC links are fully functional, the transmission congestion will be reduced to a great extent. These links will help in transmitting power without tapping at long distances across regions. That means nobody can draw power in between," the official added.
