A child was swept away in the flood waters of the Ganga in West Bengal's Malda district today where the situation continued to be grim, while some areas of West Midnapore, Burdwan, Hooghly and Howrah districts remained inundated following the release of water from Damodar Valley Corporation barrage.
A senior Malda district official said the two-year-old was swept away in Kaliachak block number three as vast areas of the block were submerged in water from Ganga which was flowing at extreme danger level in the area.
29 villages were submerged in Ganga water hitting thousands of people and several gram panchayat areas in the district, including Manikchak, Birnagar, Krishnapur, were partially under water, he said.
The administration opened four relief camps and boats were pressed into service in the submerged areas to ferry the marooned and transport relief materials, he added.
Reports from other districts said water level has receded at some places as there was scanty or no rainfall in most places.
The districts of West Midnapore, Hooghly, Howrah, Bankura, Burdwan and Nadia are affected by the release of water by DVC.
Officials said the situation will be normal if there is no rainfall for the next two days.
The weatherman said the two districts of West Midnapore and Hooghly received 3 cm of rainfall each while no rainfall was recorded in other districts.
