Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Army today paid rich tributes to the martyrs of 'Operation Vijay', which was launched in 1999 to evict Pakistani Army from Kargil heights.
July 26 is celebrated as the anniversary of India's victory in the 1999 Kargil conflict with Pakistan.
Chinar Corps, which was at the forefront in conducting the operations, joined the proud nation in remembering the martyrs, gallant serving soldiers and veterans to celebrate the 18th Kargil Vijay Diwas, an army official said.
He said Chinar Corps commander Lt Gen J S Sandhu and all ranks of Chinar Corps paid homage to the Kargil heroes in a solemn ceremony held at the war memorial in Badami Bagh Cantonment here.
The ceremony included brief narration of the Kargil War highlighting the saga of courage and valour of the martyrs, prayers by religious teachers and laying of wreath in proud remembrance of the valiant heroes who participated in the operations, the official said.
On this day in 1999, the Indian Army triumphed over Pakistan Army and chased them out completely from heights of Dras, Mushkoh, Kaksar and Batalik.
Intruders from Northern Light Infantry of Pakistan had treacherously occupied these heights in an attempt to endanger the vital Srinagar-Leh National Highway.
