Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi today lauded China's dominance in the manufacturing sector, saying "the Chinese cat has firmly caught the global manufacturing mouse", but cautioned India against emulating the model as people there are not free to speak or question.
In an article in the Financial Times on the first anniversary of demonetisation, Gandhi also said Chinas global monopoly on blue-collar jobs is a fundamental challenge to other states, that has created millions of disenfranchised and angry workers "who express their frustration at the ballot box
whether in votes for Mr Modi, Brexit, or Donald Trump".
Quoting Communist strongman Deng Xiaoping for saying that it did not matter 'what colour the cat is as long as it catches the mouse', he said, "Today, the Chinese cat has firmly caught the global manufacturing mouse".
Gandhi said in the 1990s, Chinese manufacturing accounted for a mere 3 per cent of the worlds goods by output value, which is now close to 25 per cent.
"China currently creates on average 50,000 jobs every single day while India under Modi manages only 500," the Congress leader said quoting official figures.
"This advantage comes with a brutal cost Chinas people are not free to speak, to dissent or to question and those that do are swiftly and severely punished. This is not a model India should emulate," he added.
