The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has appealed to the Election Commission to defer the date for counting of votes for the October 15 by-election to Northern Angami-II assembly constituency in the state.
The counting of votes is scheduled for October 19, which is a Sunday and therefore a day of worship for Christians, NBCC general secretary Rev L Anjo Keikung stated in a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner.
Nagaland has a predominantly Christian population and any important official proceedings such as counting of votes held on a Sunday will disturb the worshipers and go against the religious sentiment of Christians in the state, he added.
