The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today said that the proposal to introduce public private partnership in Coal India was another step towards pushing the coal industry into private hands.
"If import of coal is a cause for concern for the government, why not allow Coal India to increase production? The PPP is a conspiracy by the government to privatise Coal India," CITU national general secretary Tapen Sen, who is here to attend the state convention of the CITU's Jharkhand unit, told reporters.
Alleging that the budget proposals presented yesterday were "nothing but a fraud and deception upon the people", the Rajya Sabha member said, CITU will step up agitations against any move towards privatisation of public sectors.
"Only twenty out of 198 coal blocks allotted to corporate sectors are being utilised. The rest are kept to gain from share prices," he claimed.
