The indefinite strike by municipal workers across the state and in the Greater Hyderabad limits for hike in wages hit necessary civic services like lifting of garbage on the second day today.
In the state capital itself, garbage has been lying strewn and is piling up, with authorities fearing that it may pose health hazards to citizens if left unattended.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has made alternative arrangements for lifting of garbage and sweeping of roads by pressing into service as many as 150 garbage-clearing vehicles for each ward.
However, the arrangements are seemingly falling short to tackle around 4,000 metric tonne of garbage being generated everyday in the capital itself, a civic official said.
The joint action committee of the municipal unions went on strike yesterday, asking the state government to increase the monthly salary of outsourcing employees from Rs 6,700 to Rs 16,500. The unions also sought regularisation of contract employees besides other demands.
The employees held protests in the state capital and also in cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, besides under different municipalities and municipal corporation areas across the state by organising rallies.
