More than 2.5 lakh cases are pending before the High Court and the chief justice had in the past expressed concern about it.
The chief justice, while hearing a case during the day, asked a few senior lawyers to ponder over the possibility of observing a two-minute silence to pay their respects.
At present, the practice is to abstain from attending courts for a specific time suggested by the Bar Association and hold condolence meetings to pay respects to the dead lawyer on the day of his or her death or on the next working day.
The court rose at 3.30 pm today instead of the regular schedule at 4.30 pm to condole a lawyer's death.
