Classes not taking place in 100 state-run schools in city

Classes are not being held in 100 state-run secondary schools in the city due to lack of students, a School Education department official said on Thursday.

The schools, most of them Bengali and few Hindi mediums, are located in Shyambazar, Paikpara, Bhowanipore, Behala, Jadavpur, Taratala, Tollygunje and Cossipore areas, the official said.

"The schools have witnessed 'zero or very little students' enrolment' in the years 2018-19 despite having a number of teaching-non teaching staff and hence the government may think about closing them for utilising the buildings for better official purposes," the official said.

The final decision about closing down of the 100 schools has not been taken yet, he said.

The official did not specify any time frame for closing down the schools where classes are not taking place.

The schools include several girls schools in north, central and south Kolkata, he said.
