Cleanliness drive, tree plantation part of Tihar's I-Day

A special cleanliness and tree plantation drive are among the programmes which are being held in Tihar Jail as part of week-long Independence Day celebrations at the prison complex.
Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) and Tihar PRO Mukesh Prasad said that as per the directions of the government, week-long celebrations to mark August 15 are being organised at all jails under Delhi Prisons.
As part of the celebrations, which started on August 15, certain special drives are being undertaken, Prasad told PTI.
A special cleanliness drive has been launched in all the jails and offices of Delhi Prisons, including the Tamil Nadu Special Police, CRPF, ITBP, PWD and residential areas within the Tihar and Rohini jail complexes.
All barracks, toilets and bathrooms in the prison wards and other places will be cleaned during the week with toiletry items, clothes, slippers, etc. Having been provided to the inmates, he said.
Also, an extensive tree plantation drive is being carried out inside Tihar Jail and at the Rohini district jail, Prasad said.
General awareness camps, too, are being held in all jails under Delhi Prisons to make the inmates and prison staff aware about civic and health-related issues, he added. A poster competition and similar activities have also been undertaken as part of the awareness drive.
Cultural programmes highlighting the freedom struggle, sacrifices of freedom fighters and the importance of Independence Day are also being organised at all the jails. Literary competitions and discussions are also being held, he said.
Independence Day was celebrated at the prison headquarters with flag hoisting by Alok Kumar Verma, Director General (Prisons).
The newly-appointed Verma congratulated all jail officials, security forces, staff members and inmates on the occasion. He also announced the President Correctional Service medal for the year 2014, to be conferred on Bharat Bhushan, Warder-734.
Special food was served to all inmates on the occasion of Independence Day, Prasad added.
