A group of Muslim clerics today condemned the burning of an effigy of Shia cleric Kalbe Jawwad allegedly by Congress workers at Jantar Mantar a few days ago and lodged a complaint to the Election Commission.
The clerics, while addressing a press conference here, accused the Congress of "insulting" 'Islamic religious symbol' and maligning the image of their leader in public domain.
"During last three years, Congress leaders have tried their best to create divide among Muslims. Same elements are now engaged in character assassination of Maulana Kalbe Jawwad and his associates," said Maulana Mohsin Taqvi.
The clerics also alleged the ruling party of neglecting issues related to Muslims during its tenure.
"Anjuman-e-Haideri has written a protest letter to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi asking to clarify their position on the sensitive issue but both of them have chosen even not to acknowledge the complaint," they said.
The clerics said that they were now seeking the intervention of Election Commission on the issue.
Protesters led by Congress MLA from Seelampur Matin Ahmed, brother of party MLA Hasan Ahmad who was allegedly attack by a group of youths in Lucknow a day before, staged demonstration and burned the effigy of Jawwad at Jantar Mantar on Saturday last.
