The then Parliamentary Secretary of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had made a specific request to add the title 'Shrimant', used by Maratha royal families in pre-independence days, to the name of late Madhav Rao Scindia while renaming Canning Road here in his honour.
The file notings disclosed under the Right to Information Act show that New Delhi Municipal Council in 2002 had decided to rename Canning Road in the honour of the former Union minister, who was killed in an aircrash in September 2001.
Scindia belonged to the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior.
Ramakant Goswami, the then Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister, also asked NDMC to rename a road in the honour of the deceased leader, according to an RTI response given to activist Subhash Agrawal.
He was intimated by the Council that a decision has already been taken to rename Canning Road, which starts from Ferozshah Road and after crossing Kasturba Gandhi Marg joins Copernicus Marg, in the honour of Scindia, it shows.
Goswami, through a letter dated April 8, 2002 again approached the then NDMC Chairman, Subhash Sharma, with a request saying, "After lot of thinking, it has been decided that 'Shrimant' needs to be added before the name of late Madhav Rao Scindia. I hope you will make the changes and oblige me."
The request from Goswami was accepted and nod was given to add Shrimant in the name of Scindia.
"In this connection, a further request from Parliamentary Secretary to Chief Minister that before name of Madhav Rao Scindia, the word 'Shrimant' be added has been considered and approved as amended," an official of NDMC wrote.
