Under its 'Mobilize Your City' campaign, French Agency for Development (AFD) would support the study of CMPs of these three cities at a cost of about Rs 26 crore.
"Urban Development Ministry has agreed to the proposal of AFD to study the CMPs of Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Kochi to assess integration of non-motorised, low cost and low green house gas emitting transport solutions in their transport plans," an official statement said.
Speaking at a session on 'Mobilise Your City- Comprehensive Mobility Plans for Low Carbon Strategies' at the Urban Mobility Conference in Gandhinagar today, Rima Le Coquic of AFD said that further to the commitments under Paris Agreement on Climate Change, cities need to integrate climate change concerns while planning for urban mobility.
She said that Ahmedabad's CMP would soon be studied from this perspective in consultation with city officials and other stakeholders.
Sanjay Gupta from Delhi-based School of Planning and Architecture said there is a need for a hierarchical transport systems in cities with priority for public transport, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and other Non-Motorised Transport.
G Hari of Kochi Metro Rail Corporation said that a CMP for Kochi has recently been drawn based on extensive use of waterways and LNG in support of Metro.
Experts appreciated Urban Development Ministry for insisting on CMPs of cities before approving investments in transport oriented projects.
It has been stated by experts that only about 70 cities have so far come out with CMPs indicating the extent of urban transport challenge, the statement said.
