A city-based hospital today claimed its Director has become the first Indian surgeon to be selected for the prestigious Walter P Blount Humanitarian International Award of US-based Scoliosis Research Society.
Dr S Rajasekaran, Director of Ganga Hospital, was the first Indian surgeon to be selected for the award, a release from the hospital said here.
The award is given to a surgeon who has excelled in great measure to extend the benefits of modern spine surgery to the citizens of the world.
The award carrying a plaque would be presented at the golden jubilee annual meeting of the society to be held in Minnesota next week.
Dr Rajasekaran was being honoured for creating a 'low-cost' high-quality spine surgery model which has benefited more than 7,000 poor patients, the release said.
This had been appreciated by the international body as "most suited" not only for developing nations but also for many advanced countries as adoption of these principles would bring down the cost tremendously, it said.
While expressing delight for getting the recognition, Rajasekaran said the Ganga Hospital had performed free of cost surgeries worth more than Rs 15 crore since 1991, benefiting more than 3,000 patients with complex spine and orthopaedic problems.
