A CCTV camera system funded by the business community of an area, one on the same lines as a CCTV project operational in Gujarat's Surat, will be inaugurated in North Delhi's Dariba Kalan Chandni Chowk tomorrow by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung.
"A high-level team of Delhi Police had recently visited Surat to study the CCTV model in Gujarat. The project which has been highly successful there, has been emulated by us in Dariba Kalan area of North Delhi. This is the first-of-its- kind initiative in Delhi," said Delhi Police PRO Rajan Bhagat.
So far CCTV system has been funded by the Government and is being implemented and maintained by ECIL/Delhi Police.
In order to further augment the CCTV coverage in the city, it has been decided to initiate a Business Area Watch Scheme as community initiative, with the Delhi Police acting as the facilitator of the scheme and public spirited members of the community funding the installation, maintenance and operation of CCTV coverage in their area, particularly markets and other commercial/institutional locations.
Jung will be inaugurating the first such project under BAWS in Delhi at Dariba Kalan, Chandni Chowk at 4.00 PM. This project of CCTV coverage in Dariba Kalan market is funded by the Dariba Jewellers/Sarafa Welfare Association.
The project will have total 32 CCTV cameras (mega-pixel fixed cameras) covering entire stretch of the historical Jewelry Market of Dariba Kalan, Chandni Chowk.
All the cameras will be connected through optical fibre up to a Local Control Room established at the Association's office, Ravi Market, Dariba Kalan. There will be a video recording of up to 25 days and the cameras will be further connected through internet to Police Station Kotwali, said Bhagat.
