He suffered minor injuries, they said.
Srirangam mutt officials said the 83-year-old jeer, was reading a vedic book near the well, which had a low parapet wall. He fainted and fell into the well last evening but fire service personnel, who were immediately informed, rescued him, they said.
The jeer, who suffered bruises, was able to walk to the ambulance van, Srinivasan, a mutt official, said.
"Maybe he got exhausted and would have fainted.He was not well for the past few days, but used to keep his schedules," Srinivasan said, adding, he was admitted to a private hospital at Tiruchirappalli.
