Congress today appointed party MLA from Punjab Amrinder Singh Raja Brar as the president of Indian Youth Congress in place of Maharashtra MP Rajiv Satav, setting off the process of organisational revamp.
"Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approved the name of Amrinder Singh Raja Brar, MLA (Punjab), as President of Indian Youth Congress with immediate effect," party General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said in a statement.
His appointment is likely to be followed by a revamp of the organisation. Congress MP from Hingoli in Maharashtra Satav's term as the Youth Congress chief had ended long ago.
Brar, who mostly uses surname 'Warring' after his village name, has been a Youth Congress General Secretary and held positions in Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee as well.
The 37-year-old MLA from Gidderbaha Assembly constituency said his immediate priority would be to strengthen the organisation by enrolling youth in large numbers from booth level onwards and "expose" the failures of the BJP-led central government by holding protests and other programmes.
"I will strive to infuse a new lease of life into the organisaiton," he said, adding he was among the first "elected" office-bearers of Youth Congress after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi started election process.
"I or my family had no link with politics. But Rahul's drive motivated me," he said.
A number of leaders who have risen in the party hierarchy are from Youth Congress background.
Party seniors Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni, Gurudas Kamat, Anand Sharma, Mukul Wasnik and Ramesh Chennithala, Manish Tewari, Randeep Surjewala and Ashok Tanwar have all served as the Youth Congress chief.
