Congress workers had staged a protest outside the Chief Minister's secretariat and had announced gherao of Akhilesh Yadav, when police indulged in a brutal lathi-charge, injuring many of the leaders.
"We strongly condemn this act of the Akhilesh Yadav government, which claims to be with the poor but is not implementing the Food Security scheme in the state," Congress spokesperson Meem Afzal said.
He claimed that over 100 Congress leaders, including Congress General Secretary Madhusudan Mistry, were injured in the lathi-charge.
Police had baton-charged Congress workers when they tried to forcefully enter the Uttar Pradesh assembly premises during their protest to press for speedy implementation of food security scheme in the state.
